              Register

The Iowa Cancer Consortium’s Cancer and the Environment Task Force is hosting a summer webinar series, “Strategies to Reduce Environmental Cancer Risk,” that highlights actions from the individual to the institutional level that can be taken to better understand and reduce environmental and occupational exposures to cancer-causing substances.

In the first part of this series, Alicia Vasto, Water Program Director from the Iowa Environmental Council (IEC), will cover current water pollution concerns in Iowa like nitrates, their negative human health effects, and how we can improve water quality in the state. Vasto will also discuss a recently published IEC report on health risks of nitrate in drinking water. She joined the Council in 2019. Her work focuses on advocacy, outreach, and policy change to protect Iowa’s land, water, and people. Vasto grew up in Adel, IA, and holds a Master of Environmental Management degree from Duke University.

The goal of the Iowa Cancer Consortium’s Cancer and the Environment Task Force is to connect partners with resources, knowledge, and collaboration opportunities that help them succeed in practicing cancer control work through an environmental and occupational health lens, and vice versa. Learn more about the Task Force here.

In the second part of this series, Rich Gassman, Director of Iowa’s Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (I-CASH) and Audrey Tran Lam, Environmental Health Program Manager for the Center for Energy & Environmental Education at the University of Northern Iowa, will share best practices for keeping agricultural workers and their communities safe from environmental and occupational exposures that have been associated with different types of cancer.

              More about our speakers:

Rich Gassman grew up on a family farm in Northeast Iowa and was drawn to agriculture from a young age. He received his B.S in Agronomy from Iowa State University and his M.S. in Occupational Safety and Health from the University of Iowa. He is passionate about agricultural health and safety and has spent most of his career working in this area. Both personally and professionally, he understands the unique challenges our agricultural populations face. Gassman is a proven leader who has initiated, launched, monitored, and reviewed safety and health programs for multi-site corporations and organizations.

Audrey Tran Lam holds a masters degree in Public Health from the University of Iowa and a graduate certificate from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Food Systems, the Environment, and Public Health. She oversees two statewide public health education initiatives; Good Neighbor Iowa (focused on elimination of cosmetic herbicide application in public spaces to protect child health, pollinator habitat, and urban water quality), and Farming for Public Health (a program that elevates organic regenerative agriculture as an upstream, land-based solution to the cascading environmental health issues stemming from industrial agriculture), and facilitates the Pesticides & Public Health Working Group. In addition to her work at the CEEE, Audrey serves on the boards of the Iowa Rural Health Association, Heartland Health Research Alliance, and Pesticide Action Network, as well as on the Design Team for Green America’s Soil & Climate Alliance.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals have been used in plastic since the chemical revolution of the 1940s, and in the third part of this series, Dr. Emily Hilz, research scientist at the University of Texas at Austin, will be speaking about the health impacts of exposures to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in plastic and other commonly used products and how their informed use can help reduce exposure. Dr. Hilz studies the inter- and transgenerational effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Andrea Gore. Her work primarily assesses the cognitive, neurological, and genetic impacts of EDCs using animal models. Dr. Hilz received a National Research Service Award for this work in 2022, and is one of the Phase 1 winners of the HHS OWH EDC-Innovator award for her outreach work developing a web-app to screen for endocrine disruptors in personal care products. She is a member of the U.S. Endocrine Society, which is an organization of researchers at both the national and international level that aims in part to increase awareness and regulation of endocrine disruptors.

Join us for our fourth and final presentation from Kymberly Life, DO, and Arthur Zacharjasz, ARNP-BC, from Mahaska Health’s Occupational Health Team. Their team provides comprehensive health and wellness services for employee wellness including evaluation and treatment of work-related injuries, respiratory physicals, hazardous materials examinations, and other preventative health services. We will learn more from them on how to conduct an exposure history and how this tool can help determine cumulative cancer risk and intervention strategies that reduce environmental and occupational exposures to carcinogens.

               Rural Cancer Workgroup

The Iowa Rural Cancer Network was created in 2020 as an opportunity to engage Critical Access Hospitals on timely topics in rural cancer

              Purpose

Our purpose is to increase quality care throughout the cancer continuum in rural Iowa. Workgroup members represent non-profit organizations, businesses, government, academia, elected officials, health care systems, survivors and caregivers. Our goal is to convene the workgroup routinely to share resources, network, engage with rural experts, and find collective solutions to the complex challenges that prevent individuals from accessing and utilizing cancer prevention, screening, treatment, and quality of life services across rural regions of the state.

              Participation

Workgroup participation is open to anyone with an interest in reducing the burden of cancer in Iowa.

              Meetings

Meetings are held every other month on the third Thursday from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. using virtual meeting software accessible via phone, mobile device and/or computer. Agenda items to include: A reminder of committee charter/purpose; capacity-building focused on the collective; updates on action items; planning and discussion; Consortium updates; and networking (where applicable).

The Iowa Cancer Summit is a great opportunity to showcase your organization to cancer control leaders from across the state. The audience includes  researchers, cancer survivors, caregivers, healthcare administrators, public health professionals, nurses, physicians, and other cancer control advocates.

We are thrilled to welcome the director of the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Kimryn Rathmell, as this year's opening keynote speaker! We anticipate this year's Summit will be the biggest one in the Consortium's 22-year history.

The Iowa Cancer Summit is a hybrid conference, with in-person attendees in Ankeny, IA, and virtual attendees on an online platform.
